Looking for some back to school themed therapy resources? I want to show you how to use The Pout Pout Fish Goes To School In Speech Therapy! The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School by Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna (amazon affiliate link included) is the perfect book for back to school.
First, let’s talk about how to use The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School (amazon affiliate link included) in speech therapy. Then, I wanted to show you LOTS of ways to use a fun, easy fish craftivity as an extension activity. When I read books in speech therapy, I like to first read the book to my students and stop along the way to talk about what is happening in the pictures. This is a great way to highlighting new vocabulary words as you read too. Usually, my first read is me modeling language for the students. Then, the next session, I will read the book again and this time I will ask wh-questions, have my students make predictions, retell the story and identify how the character’s might be feeling! Here are some reasons that I love this book for therapy!
How To Use The Pout Pout Fish Goes To School In Speech Therapy
This book has great repetitive language for kids to be exposed to the same vocabulary words many times during the story! The pictures are very colorful and you can target what the fish are doing in each picture.
It has a great message about learning and how each student is smart! It’s perfect for explaining that you may not be able to do everything when you first come to speech, but as we work little by little, our brains grow!
There are a lot of great synonym words for common verbs such as “look” and “walk”, which is great for expanding vocabulary! Once I read the story to my students 2 times, I will begin to use extension activities to target grammar, vocabulary, oral narration, social skills, etc. with themes from the book. Two great themes are “back to school” and “ocean animals”. You can have students describe ocean animals or back to school supplies by attributes. You can also work on grammar concepts, make vocabulary webs and work on story elements!
Extension Craftivity to do with The Pout Pout Fish Goes To School
I am going to be incorporating this moving fish craftivity into therapy! This craft is very easy to make and I came up with ways to expand its use! Here is the direct link to the moving fish craftivity. It has step by step pictures available that you can access to have your students explain how to make the craft which works on language organization as well as basic concept vocabulary of first, next, then, after, before, etc.
Use your moving fish craft to have your students feed their articulation or language cards! I used my Any Craft Companion Pack and the 1inch cards fit perfectly in the fish!!
Use the slots in the fish to put therapy stimulus item cards. This is a great way to get language or articulation practice in without making it feel like work! I grabbed my Cause and Effect Camping cards and they fit great!
I recently showed some of my ideas on my on my Facebook Page that you should check out!! I am hoping to continue to do Facebook LIVE sessions weekly! What back to school books and resources do you like to use?
