How to Make Your Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick Storytelling Kit

During the Easter holiday, you want to get the old lady who swallowed a chick story props because they are affordable and accessible. Once round up all the props, store them in zipper pouches or plastic containers to pull out for years.

Here is where I found the story prop items:

  • Basket – Target a couple of years ago or use an empty tomato or strawberry container
  • Plastic Egg – Target Dollar Spot
  • Bow – borrowed my daughters, but you can get a blue ribbon and make a quick bow
  • Get straw from Dollar Tree or a craft store
  • Buy some jelly beans or use a box of candy from Dollar Tree (don’t open it so you don’t have kids trying to eat them)
  • Rabbit ball popper – from Dollar Tree in 2022 or grab it on Amazon
  • Wind Up baby chick – from Target Dollar Spot in 2022, or you can grab a two pack on Amazon

How to Use the DIY Storytelling Kit for Speech and Language Goals

old-lady-who-swallowed-a-chick

Now that your old lady who swallowed a chick storytelling kit is ready, you can pair it with the book!

As the old lady swallows something, have a student in the group hold onto it. Every time you get to their item in the story, they can hold it up, answer a question, or fill in the blank for the text.

Or, you can read the book using shared book reading strategies and then use the storytelling kit as an extension activity.

Research shows that having students retell a story in their own words using props to reenact helps with comprehension. You can read more about that in this blog post with the research article linked.
