Emotions Craft for Preschool & Kindergarten Speech Therapy

Easy emotions craft preschool and kindergarten activity

At the beginning of the school year, it is fun to do an all about me theme with your preschool and early elementary-aged students. Usually, during those first couple of weeks of speech, you are getting to know your students, and incorporating identifying emotions goes well with this theme! If you read any feelings or emotion books with your students, you need to pair this emotions craft for preschool and kindergarten students in speech therapy! But doing an emotional speech and language unit is great any time of the year, and this feelings craft for preschoolers, and kindergarten is low prep and fun!

Supplies You Need for the Emotions Craft for Preschool

Fun and easy emotions craft for preschoolers and kindergarten.

The best part of doing this feelings paper plate craft is that it uses supplies you probably already own or don’t have to spend tons of money on! Here are the art supplies for the emotion craft:

How to Make the Feelings Craft

Have your students make dots of each emotion color on the paper plate. You can visually show where students can start and stop by making dots with a pencil or marker into four parts. Then, have your students glue their emotion pictures onto the different color sections. Attach a clothespin to the paper plate and allow students to move the clothespin to the emotion they are feeling. Here is a demo on my Instagram account that you can see for reference.

Adapting the Emotions Craft for Speech and Language Groups

When making crafts in speech therapy, it can be tricky to target all the speech and language goals. Here are some ways you can use the emotions craft for preschool and early elementary speech and language goals:

  • If you have students working on speech sounds, have them practice their speech word ten times before making dots on their plate.
  • Work on naming items for the different color groups to target the colors category group.
  • Similarly, work on naming emotions for category and adjective goals.
  • Pick a phrase or sentence and use different tones of voice that signal different emotions. Have students use their clothespin to identify the correct emotion.
  • Work on syntax and morphology goals by showing your students pictures of different emotions. They can create a sentence about how the person is feeling.
  • Work on personal narratives by having students think of a time when they felt a certain emotion. Map out who was there, where it happened, what actions took place, why they felt that emotion, and when it occurred.
