Seasonal February Speech Therapy Crafts for Your Therapy Sessions

February crafts for speech therapy

Who doesn’t love craftivities? I usually plan speech therapy crafts about one to two times a month with my students because they are motivating, functional, and easy to adapt for a variety of goals.

February is one of those months where themes overlap in the best way. You can lean into winter, Valentine’s Day, cultural celebrations like Chinese New Year, and even Groundhog’s Day.

Below is a roundup of seasonal February speech therapy crafts that are easy to prep and simple to send home for extra practice.

If you’re looking specifically for Valentine’s Day speech therapy activities, including articulation and language ideas, you can check out my full Valentine’s Day speech therapy post here.

February Crafts For Speech Therapy (Beyond Valentine’s Day)

February crafts for speech therapy to use for winter, Valentine's Day and other festive holidays.

One of my go-to February themes in speech therapy is a hot chocolate craft. Winter months naturally lend themselves to warm drink themes, and this craft works well for mixed groups.

A hot chocolate craft is an easy February speech therapy option because it can be adapted for articulation, vocabulary, writing, and sequencing across your caseload. You can get a hot chocolate craft in the mini-themed unit in the Themed Therapy SLP membership. With the annual plan, you get the hot chocolate unit at any time of year. For monthly members, the hot chocolate unit is available in January.

This hot chocolate craftivity is perfect for your whole caseload because there are templates for lots of sounds, writing, vocabulary, and sequencing!

Chinese New Year Speech Therapy Crafts

February is also a great time to incorporate cultural themes into therapy. We made Chinese lanterns and dragons with a speech-and-language twist.

You can target describing, sequencing, and vocabulary while creating these crafts. If you want to see how I make them, check out my YouTube video here.

Groundhogs Day Speech Therapy Crafts

Groundhog’s Day is a fun February theme that works really well for both speech and language goals. It naturally lends itself to targeting predictions, cause and effect, WH-questions, vocabulary, and complex sentences while tying in a simple science concept about shadows.

Done-For-You Groundhog Craft (Membership Option)

Inside the Themed Therapy SLP Membership, I have a Groundhog’s Day visual craft that’s ready to use during February. You can access it as part of the monthly membership or anytime with the annual plan. The craft is designed to easily pair with articulation and language goals, making it simple to use across mixed groups. You can learn more about the membership here:www.themedtherapyslp.com

Free & Low-Prep Groundhog Craft Ideas

If you’re looking for simple Groundhog Day craft ideas you can adapt for speech therapy, here are a few options that work well:

  • A paper-cup groundhog craft from The Purple Yarn is easy to assemble and works well for retelling, sequencing, and articulation practice.
  • A paper-plate groundhog craft by Simply Every Day Mom is another low-prep option that allows students to decorate it and then use it to practice describing, labeling, or answering questions.

To extend any Groundhog Day craft, you can have students write or glue articulation or language targets on the back using a reusable craft companion. This makes it easy to adapt a single craft for multiple goals without extra prep.

Groundhog Puppet + Science Tie-In

A groundhog puppet craft from Little Bins Little Hands is a great free option if you want to lean into the science connection. You can use it to teach about shadows, make predictions about whether the groundhog sees his shadow, and discuss what happens next.

This type of activity works especially well for:

  • Answering and generating WH-questions
  • Making predictions
  • Using complex and compound sentences
  • Building seasonal vocabulary

Why Groundhog’s Day Crafts Work in Speech Therapy

Groundhog’s Day crafts are quick to prep, highly engaging, and easy to adapt for articulation, language, and literacy goals. Whether you use a done-for-you visual craft from the membership or a simple paper craft, this theme fits perfectly into February therapy sessions without overlapping too heavily with Valentine’s Day activities.

Valentine’s Day Speech Therapy Crafts

Valentine’s Day is another popular February theme in speech therapy and a great opportunity to work on articulation, language, and literacy goals in a meaningful way. Heart-themed crafts are easy to adapt for mixed groups and work well for both small-group and whole-class lessons. I share some of my favorite low-prep crafts (two are freebies) with ideas for how to use to work on speech and language skills.

For therapists looking for hands-on Valentine’s Day crafts, here are a few options depending on your planning style:

  • I have a free Valentine’s Day speech therapy craft “Love You to Pieces” that’s easy to prep and works well for articulation and language targets.
  • My 3D Valentine’s Day articulation and language craft is a more interactive option that allows students to practice target sounds, vocabulary, and sentence formulation while creating a finished project they can take home.
  • Inside the Themed Therapy SLP Membership, you’ll also find low-prep Valentine’s Day crafts designed for small groups and whole-class lessons. These crafts pair easily with articulation, language, and AAC goals and are ready to use throughout February.

Why Valentine’s Day Crafts Work in Speech Therapy

Valentine’s Day crafts are motivating, familiar to students, and easy to differentiate. Whether you’re targeting articulation, sentence structure, vocabulary, or WH-questions, these activities provide a meaningful context for practice without adding extra prep to your therapy week. And, it is a great theme that you can also incorporate friendship and kindness, too!

Candy & Sweet Treat Speech Therapy Crafts

Candy and sweet treats are another fun February theme that students instantly connect with. These crafts work especially well for articulation practice, vocabulary, describing, and sentence formulation, and they’re easy to adapt for mixed speech and language groups.

Sweet Sound Candy Craft (Free Download)

One of my favorite low-prep options is this free Sweet Sound candy craft, where students practice their target sounds as they fill a candy jar. You can easily customize it by having students write their speech or language targets on the candy pieces before gluing them onto the craft. My any craft companion would work well with this craft!

This type of craft is great because it:

  • Works for articulation, vocabulary, and grammar goals
  • Can be sent home for extra practice
  • Is quick to prep and reuse year after year

More Sweet Treat Craft Ideas for Speech Therapy

If you want to expand beyond candy, here are a few sweet-treat-themed ideas that work well in February:

  • Cupcake crafts – Perfect for targeting describing (colors, toppings, size), sentence formulation, and articulation. Each frosting layer or sprinkle can represent a speech trial.
  • Baking-themed crafts or visuals – Great for sequencing, following directions, and using transition words (first, next, then, last).
  • Cookie or dessert decorating crafts – Easy to adapt for mixed groups by changing the language or speech targets written on each piece.

You can also pair these crafts with pretend baking or cooking language activities to build background knowledge and conversational skills. We have a baking unit in the Themed Therapy SLP membership with a cupcake and cookie craft!

Winter Speech Therapy Crafts

Since February still falls right in the middle of winter for many areas, winter-themed crafts are another easy option to rotate into your therapy sessions. Snowmen, winter animals, and winter clothing crafts all provide familiar contexts for practicing speech and language skills. Get all the best low-prep winter speech therapy activity crafts in this blog post.

February is full of flexible themes that make it easy to keep therapy engaging without over-planning. Whether you’re using winter crafts, Groundhog’s Day activities, sweet treat themes, or Valentine’s Day projects, these ideas can be easily adapted for articulation, language, and mixed groups. Rotating a few simple crafts throughout the month helps keep students motivated while still supporting meaningful speech and language practice.
