One Thing to Remember with Theme-Based Therapy
As SLPs with high caseloads, remember that you don’t have to switch themes every week. Using a theme for 2-4 weeks can save you time and energy, preventing burnout. This approach allows you to explore themes more deeply and gives students more time to practice skills within a familiar context. Check out my tips on making November speech therapy planning more efficient in Real Talk SLP podcast episode 45.

Seasonal November Speech Therapy Themes
The fall season is still in full force in November. If you weren’t able to some of the fall speech therapy themes in October, this is the time to do them. Here are some themes
- Pumpkins and Apples: You can theme smash farmers and harvesting fall foods like pumpkins and apples. Use apple or pumpkin-themed books, crafts, and sensory bins to teach concepts like counting, colors, and descriptions. Check out my apple-themed co-teaching post and apple toys and props ideas for more inspiration.
- Leaves: As leaves change colors, use them in sensory bins, crafts, articulation drills, and science discussions. Build background knowledge about why leaves turn different colors in Autumn and fall off trees. The beauty of this theme is you can use it for younger and older students with non-fiction passages from Wonderopolis.org, YouTube videos, or bringing in real leaves for an investigation.
- Squirrels and acorns: Right now, squirrels are preparing for winter and collecting acorns, nuts, and seeds. A squirrel and acorn theme is great for describing, comprehension, vocabulary, verbs, and more! You can then plan a winter animal or hibernation theme after squirrels.
- Corn: This is another food you can talk about harvesting and learning the history of corn. There are lots of easy hands-on activities you can do like learning about why corn pops, facts about corn, making corn crafts, and doing a corn grinding activity.
November Speech and Language Activities for National Holidays
November offers several fun national holidays that can inspire your speech therapy sessions:
- November 4th: Candy Day: Kids love talking about anything sweet, so planning a fun candy-themed unit would be perfect for this time of year. You work on more/less with candy items, learn the history of your student’s favorite sweet treats, and work on describing goals while talking about what candy looks, tastes, feels, etc.
- November 11th: Veteran’s Day: This holiday affects all United States citizens, especially our students who have family who are currently serving or have served in the military, so it is a great theme to do with your caseload. Ideas for books and activities, The Primary Parade has some good ideas.
- National Native American Heritage Day (The Day after Thanksgiving): Learn more about the Native American and indigenous people with picture books, crafts, lesson plans, and videos.
National Holidays With a Food Theme
A food theme is perfect any time of the school year, but here are some November national holidays that would work well as speech therapy-themed units.
- November 3rd: Sandwich Day: You can use a sandwich toy set to work on the sequencing steps for making a sandwich, as well as other speech and language goals, using a toy companion cheat sheet. If you need a digital activity, this boom card deck will help you with sequencing. Wonderopolis has a lot of fun non-fiction passages, so you can learn about the history of sandwiches. Or, do the PB & J sandwich instruction challenge to work on giving directions and important details.
- November 16th: Fast Food Day: This theme would be perfect for middle school and high school students. You can compare/contrast meals from different fast food places, practice ordering and paying at a fast food restaurant, and work on more/less and other money language goals with ordering off the menu.
- November 21st: Gingerbread Man Cookie Day: I technically save Gingerbread Man for December, but if you like planning holidays around the world or a different theme, make sure you do The Gingerbread Man this month. It is a great book with many fun and engaging extension activities you can do with your students.
Thanksgiving Speech Therapy Theme Ideas
During November, we know that many families celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. You can plan many great lessons around Thanksgiving and turkey books to build knowledge about the main dish and how people celebrate. If you have students that don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, you can do a food theme or just learn how families gather for dinner. You can work on table manners, how to have a conversation, preparing foods, and describing meals your students love to eat. With the plethora of Thanksgiving commercials, funny turkey videos, and songs, you can plan easy-peasy lessons. One of my favorites is the Fast Food Simon’s Cat video paired with my speech therapy cheat sheet for mixed groups.
