I love singing a song lyric to explain my current life situation. If you read my blog regularly, you know music is my jam. When I got married, my younger brother put together a hilarious marriage song CD playlist complete with explanations for why he chose every song. It was the best gift! Last year, I started doing an SLP song playlist for the year. You can read 2015’s list HERE.
I called on some fellow SLP’s to share a song that represented their year. Each SLP blogger shared why they chose that song for 2016. As 2016 comes to end, it is good to reflect about how the year went. Although, SLP’s may be living in different parts of the world, experiencing our own blessings and challenges, we can all relate to the emotions a year brings through song. When I get to see a glimpse into someone’s world, it helps me to understand and interpret my current journey with life.
If you love music like me, you will probably love reading my 10 Songs An SLP Should Sing At Work. It should give ya a chuckle. Now, on to my SLP song playlist 2016 compilation. Hopefully, you will be able to connect with some or all of these songs. Whether this 2016 was a difficult year or the year that dreams came true, it is another year filled with moments of lessons learned, successes, failures, laughs and tears.
For myself, 2016 had two songs that represented my year. First off, Trust In You by Lauren Daigle was played a lot in my car on my way to work. I needed the reminder daily that the only thing I should trust in with my whole heart is Jesus Christ. I am still working on trusting Jesus with my whole heart. That said, I have made a lot of growth with trusting in God’s plans rather than MY plans. This year I had to trust God with moving into my new home, starting a new school district, the loss of my Uncle and hosting Christmas at my house. 2016 was a year of letting go of trusting only myself and relying on God to take care of me.
Chasing The Sun by Sara Bareilles was also an anthem for me this year in 2016. The lyrics “You said, remember that life is not meant to be wasted, you can always be chasing sun. So, fill up your lungs and run. You can always be chasing the sun.” reminded me that no matter the set backs and trials you might be facing, there is always space for chasing your hopes and dreams. I tried to not let all my imperfections, insecurities and difficult life situations overtake the wonderful attributes God gave me to share with this world.
Looks Like Language -My song for 2016 is “Let it Happen” by Tame Impala. There have been so many changes in my life this year, like a roller coaster ride, and it isn’t over yet! You only get to do this one time, so let it happen and think of all the blessings that you have!
Susan Berkowitz from Kidz Learn Language– held on to Elton John’s song “I’m Still Standing” to help her through 2016. “This song has been my anthem for many years, and this year was a bad one.”
Sarah & Lisa From SLPToolkit picked “Run the World (Girls) by Beyoncé” to describe 2016. Sarah and Lisa were empowered in 2016 sharing “Women are so strong – juggling being moms, working, giving to their communities and being in business. This year we have gotten to meet so many fierce, driven women who are following their dreams. It has inspired us to keep following ours!”
Monae’s Speech House– chose Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back Again”. Monae shared that “this year has been a crazy year with juggling three schools with high minutes/high needs kids! On days when I’m leaving late, I blast this song… lol!”
The Speech Bubble SLP had a lot of changes in 2016! She chose It Happens By Sugarland because “With being pregnant and maternity leave and going back to work I have had to learn to just roll with it.”
Speech Time Fun shared her song motto of 2016 was I will Survive. Hallie explained, “2016 I had some personal challenges and some challenges at work…I had to always remind myself “I will survive..” to help get me through those stressful days”.
SLP Talk With Desiree picked Jewel’s What You Are. Desiree chose the word “celebrate” for 2016. She shared that “I tried to celebrate the moment for what it was, embrace the situations successes and celebrate them without brushing over them while longing for what I hoped for the future . I found that I actually grow more by focusing on the here and now by intentionally celebrating and finding the positive in even the darkest situation.”
SLP NOW selected Brand New by Ben Rector for 2016. Marisha expressed “My song of the year is Brand New because it has been a year full of changes and new adventures (personally and professionally). I got out of my shell and tried some new things I never thought I would do. It was definitely scary, but also AWESOME!”
Crazy Speech World shares that I will Follow You by Toulouse is the song she has chosen to walk down the aisle on her wedding day. Jenn explains that “2016 seems to all come down to one day in October when the man I love asked me to be his wife. So many answered prayers were wrapped up in that request for both of us, we are incredibly blessed. I can’t wait to walk with him through the rest of our lives…and this is the song I’ve chosen to walk down the aisle to him to start our journey. When it comes down to it, 2016 was all about love and family, and nothing is better than that.
Live Love Speech felt the song “Scars to your beautiful” by Alessia Cara represented her 2016 year. Kristine shared that she “loves the meaning behind the song. No matter what bumps in the road I have come across, I still try to remain positive and see the “beauty” in things!”
