There is a new No Prep Building A Sentence Activities pack in my TPT store! Do you have students on your caseload that have language delays in more than one area? Do they need lots of scaffolding techniques to help them build more complex language?
I have several students on my caseload that fit this mold. I decided to target grammar and expanding language by breaking down the wh-question words to help build more complex sentences.
When I have tried to teach the grammar rules and vocabulary, these students often “forget” what we learned the previous session. They also get frustrated with not being able to master the skill and I find that I get stuck with trying to teach the same thing over and over again.
I decided to create a resource that had visual answer choices embedded in the worksheet that also worked on understanding the “who, what, where, and when” of the picture.
So far since I started using them, my students are completing these with less verbal prompting from me and are showing increased motivation to try!
I love how many different language skills this pack covers. This pack also begins to incorporate writing without all the tears and frustration of not knowing how to spell all the words (something my students lament about when asked to write).
I also included real photo task cards that include sentence strips, so that my students can work on word order.
What do you think? How do you target language with students exhibiting deficits in both grammar and vocabulary?
